Prosthetics and Orthotics

Prosthetics and Orthotics is an allied health profession concerned with design , development , fitting and manufactruing of prostheses and orthoses. Prostheses replace the function and aesthetics of a lost limb, whilst orthoses are devices that support or correct musculoskeletal deformities and / or abnormalities of the human body.

Individuals who benefit from a complex orthosis may have an orthopaedic condition such as scoliosis, a fracture or have sustained physical impairment from a stroke or spinal cord injury. Custom-made devices are recommended for congenital abnormalities such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy as well as degenerative diseases like arthritis and diabetes melltus.

When appropriately prescribed, these orthoses can decrease pain and increase stability in an unstable joint, along with preventing potential progression of deformity.

Improved quality of life often results from the application of the principles of orthotics an prosthetics. These services are offered through registered Prosthetist/ Orthotist and are available to provide short and long term comfort to those in need.
