Triage Process Explained

Prior to entering the Sandy Crest emergency room consultation area all patients are systematically triaged (screened) by our very highly trained and friendly nurses. Triaging establishes the potential seriousness of any given patient’s medical condition; which in turn determines the order in which the patient is eventually seen. For example a 45 year old man with severe chest pain and shortness of breath will be seen ahead of a child with a bruised toe; even though the child may have been registered ahead of the gentleman.

Point of care blood tests
Sandy Crest has the ability to process a number of blood test at the patient’s bedside. For example in less than 15 minutes they can accurately evaluate the patient’s blood sugar, haemoglobin, kidney function, liver function, calcium levels, cholesterol profile, cardiac enzymes, amylase and more. This allows them to be in a position to more completely and accurately assess the patient at the time of the consultation.

By July 2008 we will be offering additional point of care tests including drug screening, D-dimer, cardiac failure markers and more.

Knights Pharmacy
Knights Pharmacy Sandy Crest is one of the 10 Knights Pharmacies island wide. All are computer linked so that refills can be received from any location. Knights Sandy Crest is open everyday, including bank holidays, from 7am - 10:00pm. They honor prescriptions written by any practitioner registered in Barbados.

An on-call Pharmacist is available for filling prescriptions outside of the scheduled opening hours. Patients are charged a nominal fee for this service.

Diagnostic Radiology
Diagnostic Radiology (DR), Barbados’ oldest and most respected radiology service has a branch located within the Sandy Crest complex. Services include state-of-the-art digital x-rays, ultrasonagraphy and CT-Scans.

DR is open daily from 8am—6pm and it is the only private radiology service that is easily accessible 24-hours. An on-call Radiographer and Radiologist is readily available. DR services are available to anyone with a request form from a Barbados registered medical practitioner.

Ambulance
Sandy Crest prides itself on the fact that it can access a non-government or government ambulance service 24/7 at almost a moments notice.

Referrals
Cases needing hospitalization are referred to the Queen Elizabeth or Bayview Hospitals. Sandy Crest tries to refer their patients to specialists who places the patient first at all time. Barbados Reference Lab
This is Barbados’ most highly regarded private medical laboratory, with phlebotomy and collection centres located upstairs Sandy Crest Medical Centre; at “Mayfield”, 4th Avenue Belleville; and “The Thomas Daniel Building”, Hincks Street, Bridgetown.
The Laboratory offers a range of tests utilizing some of the most modern technologies and procedures available. A highly dedicated and professional staff ensures the commendable level of laboratory standards and customer service.

The Sandy Crest collection centre is open Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
